Dr Seuss's real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. He was an American writer, animator and cartoonist. He was born on the 2nd of March in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He died at the age of 87 on the 24th of September, 1991.

He began signing his work with his pen name, "Suess". He had published over 60 children's books which were often characterized by imaginative characters and rhyme. He most celebrated books include the bestselling "The Cat In The Hat", "Blue Fish, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and so on.

Dr Seuss had also worked as an illustrator for advertising campaigns especially for Flit and Standard Oil. He had also worked as a political cartoonist for PM, a New York City newspaper. During World War II, he serviced in the U.S. Army as an animator in the animation department. During his job as an animator, he wrote "Design for Death", a film that later won in the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature.

After the war, he and his wife moved California. Returning to children's book, he had wrote many works, including such children's favourite as "If I Ran The Zoo" and "On Beyond Zebra!". Dr Seuss went on to write many other children's book, both in his new simplified vocabulary manner.

In 1967, he was traumatised by the death of his wife. Moreover, he was suffering from illnesses including cancer. Theodor Seuss Geisel never had children of his own. Instead, he would say this when he is asked, "You have them, I'll entertain them." He was a fascinating and good man. He was cremated when he died. His ashes were scattered and in 1995, UCSD's University Library Building was renamed Geisel Library as to honor his contributions to the library.

I for one love all his books especially "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and "The Cat In The Hat". He inspires me through all the English books that I have read.
